Das Wort "Big brother ist watching you!" ist allgemein bekannt. Es ist Synonym für den perfekten Überwachungsstaat, für das Ende jeder Individualität und Menschlichkeit, für das Eindringen eines Herrschaftsbereichs in die Intimsphäre und sogar in die Gedanken geworden. Mit "1984", seinem letzten Roman, den George Orwell 1948 kurz vor seinem Tod veröffentlichte, wurde der Verfasser der wohl bekanntesten Schreckens-Utopie des 20. Jahrhunderts populär. Die Anti-Utopie, eingebettet in die totalitären Erfahrungen des Stalinismus wie auch des Faschismus in Spanien und des Nationalismus in Deutschland, aber auch des britischen Imperialismus, muss als Absage an jedwede Form von Totalitarismus gesehen werden. Orwell verstand das Buch ebenso wie seine Satire "Farm der Tiere" als Negativfolie für einen demokratischen Sozialismus. Das Jahr 1984 ist zwar vergangen, ohne dass sich die Schreckensvisionen erfüllt hätten, an Aktualität hat dieses Werk trotzdem kein bisschen verloren.

Die aus dem Jahr 1977 stammende Hörspielfassung fokussiert das Geschehen auf die Darstellung der Hauptfigur, Winston Smith. Der kleine Beamte arbeitet im Wahrheitsministerium systematisch an der Verfälschung der Geschichte. Gemeinsam mit seiner Geliebten Julia lehnt er sich gegen das System, gegen den Staat des "Großen Bruder" auf. Beide werden gefoltert - besonders einprägsam und grausam ist die Rattenszene in Zimmer 101 - und kehren mit gereinigtem Bewusstsein, bar aller Gefühle, Wünsche und Träume geläutert in die Gesellschaft zurück. Nach dieser Gehirnwäsche werden sie nicht mehr gegen die Spielregeln, die da lauten "Krieg ist Frieden. Freiheit ist Sklaverei. Unwissenheit ist Stärke." aufbegehren. Sie werden keine Gedankenverbrechen begehen und den "Großen Bruder", der dank modernster Technik die Bewohner Ozeaniens bis in ihre intimsten Bereiche verfolgt, lieben.

Mit Ernst Jacobi als Held Winston Smith ist eine hervorragende Besetzung gelungen. Aber auch Dieter Borsche als O'Brian und Angela Winkler als Julia sind glänzende Sprecher. Die Verhöre und Foltern sind eindrucksvoll in Szene gesetzt. Grauen macht sich breit. Alle Geräusche kommen direkt und echt rüber, man bekommt Gänsehaut. Ein Highlight des Hörspiels ist die Musik von Friedrich Scholz, die die totale Überwachung genial umsetzt: beispielsweise die Szene mit der Morgengymnastik. Insgesamt ein in jeder Hinsicht gelungenes Hörspiel mit geschliffenen Dialogen, dramaturgisch beeindruckend in Szene gesetzt. Unbedingt zu empfehlen!

"1984" und "Farm der Tiere" machten George Orwell, der vor 100 Jahren geboren wurde und bereits 1950 an Tuberkulose verstarb, zu einem der einflussreichsten politischen Schriftsteller. Der Sohn eines britischen Beamten in Nordostindien war ein erbitterter Gegner des englischen Imperialismus und kämpfte im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg. Als Journalist stand er stets auf der sozialistischen Seite. Dogmatiker war Orwell jedoch nicht, dazu war er viel zu ironisch und kannte den Menschen zu sehr.

Airstrip One is part of the vast political entity Oceania, which is eternally at war with one of two other vast entities, Eurasia and Eastasia. At any moment, depending upon current alignments, all existing records show either that Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia and allied with Eastasia, or that it has always been at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia. Winston Smith knows this, because his work at the Ministry of Truth involves the constant "correction" of such records. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.
